Stop the presses! This news just in: Refrigerating Fruit Keeps it Fresh Longer! I realize that this probably seems very obvious to some, maybe even most of you, but I just realized this last month. Until last month, I kept my fruit in baskets on the counter. My theory was that if my children had easy access to fruit they would eat it more often. However, I realized that often the fruit sat uneaten and whenever I asked my children why they would reply that the apples or oranges had become “soft”. Last month several grocery stores had great sales on fruit. I really wanted to take advantage of them but was afraid of spoilage. While lamenting that I did not have some place cool and dark like Grandma’s cellar to store fruit, I had an amazing epiphany: I have a refrigerator! Everyone is happy with the new arrangement. I still keep the bananas and mangoes on the counter, but everything else goes in the refrigerator. The kids have commented on how crunchy and juicy the apples, oranges, and grapes are now that I keep them in the crisper. Imagine that the crisper actually keeps fruit crisp!

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
