Repurposing Banana Peels

I am participating in Food Waste Friday hosted by The Frugal Girl. Monitoring my food waste, and documenting it with a picture, keeps me accountable and motivates me to remain vigilant in my goal to minimize, if not eliminate, food waste in my household.

We had a little bit of waste this week. I forgot about some dipping sauce and a few tomatoes turned before I could use them. I took pictures but some how every picture I took over the last 2 weeks was deleted from my camera. I had already transferred all but the last 3 days to my computer, but I have several recipes that I will have to cook again, so I can include pictures with the post – my family is remarkably untroubled by that fact.

Thankfully, we downloaded the below video of my son repurposing a banana peel because it was part of the lost data on my camera. Andrew is very specific when he tells us how he wants the banana cut so that the dimensions fit with his plans. FYI, the stem is the actual space shuttle; my husband edited it to make the file smaller and that part was cut.

When Andrew is done playing, his “space shuttles” are composted. : )

Thanks for some quality points there. I am kind of new to online , so I printed this off to put in my file, any better way to go about keeping track of it then printing?

Banana peels can also be great if you cut them up and plant them in your flower beds–you'll end up with more flowers! My mom passed this on to me this year and I had more daisies than I ever have had before.

Great attention-getting title. Your son is adorable, and none of my creative imaginative children ever thought to make a space ship out of bananas. Now that's thinking outside the box.

Your title drew me in-oh my goodness but your son is so smart and so cute too! What about building a space shuttle out of a banana!

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
