Gift cards are a common gift these days, but did you know they are a great tool for saving money? Here is how to save money on common expenses using gift cards.

Gift cards are not just for birthdays and holidays - you can use them to save money all year. Here is how to save money on common expenses using gift cards.

Do you have gift cards laying around that you haven’t used yet? You probably already know you can save money by using them, but did you know you can save money by purchasing them and using them on every day and regular purchases you make throughout the year and even your bills? Here is how to save money with gift cards on everything from school clothes to vacations!

How to Save Money On Common Expenses Using Gift Cards

How to Buy Discount Gift Cards

Buy gift cards at a discount– In order to utilize gift cards to save money, you must first buy them at a discount. There are many websites where you can do this. The one I suggest is Gift Inventory. You can buy gift cards for up to 55% off there. This can really equal some huge savings!

With discounted gift cards, you not only save money on buying the gift card but when you go to use the card, you save money on the product or service. For example, let’s say you buy a $10 gift card to Target for $8. You still have a $10 balance on that card, but paid $8 for it. You can then turn around and buy a $10 shirt which you got for a 20% savings by using your gift card!

How to Use Discounted Gift Cards to Save Money

Buy Gift Cards for Your Bills – Did you know you can buy gift cards for things like gym memberships, Netflix or Hulu, Verizon and even Amazon? You could pay your monthly recurring bills at a discounted rate by simply buying gift cards at a cheaper price and paying your monthly bill with it.

Get Gift Cards for Savings on Christmas Gifts – Buy gift cards all year long at a discount for large savings during the holiday season. You will not only be spending less on gifts but you won’t even have to spend much at that time of year so you can avoid a financial crisis. Plus, if you need a quick gift, you could give one away!

Purchase Gift Cards for Savings on Back to School – There are lots of apparel gift cards out there so purchasing gift cards at a discount could really help you buy new school clothes for all the kids in your home from kindergarten to high school!

Buy Gift Cards to Save Money on Vacation Expenses – You wouldn’t believe how many gift cards there are out there for everything trip related. You can buy gift cards for hotel stays, rental cars, gas, food at restaurants and even things like Uber! If you are taking a trip to an amusement park, look for Disney park gift cards or gift cards for whatever park you will be in.

Get Gift Cards to Save on Groceries– I have bought gift cards at a discount for shopping for things as mundane as groceries before and it offered me big savings. I once used a $200 gift card I got for $150. This gave me a 25% discount on my whole cart! Combine that with grocery rewards and apps to give me rebates and I got quite a lot for little.

If you try using discount gift cards to pay for everyday expenses, let me know what you thought of it.

This is a great idea! I buy gift cards at least once a month to get extra fuel savings. For example, we have a Disney trip planned so I’m buying $25 gift cards to use for souvenirs. Also Restaurant gift cards to eat out on the way.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
