Are Streaming Video Services Really Cheaper Than Cable?- Can streaming video services really save you money? Here is a cost comparison compared to cable TV.

We see so many people urging us to cut the cable strings and get streaming video services like Netflix, but are these subscriptions really cheaper? In reality, it sounds great but let’s dig deep and take a look!

Are Streaming Video Services Really Cheaper Than Cable?

Cost Comparison: Now, assuming you already have the internet we will compare prices. If you don’t already have the internet then it isn’t going to be cost effective for you to get rid of your TV, get the internet, and the videos streaming services.

If you have something like Dish Network you should be paying about $50 -$70 a month with no movie channels, because really you don’t need them! Many cable companies give you a package deal on your TV and internet, but you still shouldn’t have to pay more than $50 or so for cable a month.

First, you can get Netflix streaming for just $7.99 a month. But Netflix doesn’t allow you to watch current shows but they have some great movies and Netflix only shows.

Next, you can get Hulu to keep up to date on most of your current TV shows. This again starts at $7.99 a month. You can get most of your TV shows just 24 hours after they have run on TV.

Then, many also suggest an Amazon Prime Account. This costs $99 for a year which comes out to $8.25 a month (Try Amazon Prime 30-Day Free Trial). But this is where you can get into trouble. You can buy and rent movies on Amazon. You can also buy TV shows that you can’t get on Hulu. If you don’t buy a single extra thing on Amazon you would be paying the equivalent of $24.23 a month.

Where it can cost you more is when you start buying movies and shows on Amazon. What if your favorite shows aren’t on Netflix and Hulu? What are you to do? Well, the best way to go about this is to earn free amazon gift cards so you aren’t paying out of pocket. Next, if you are looking to buy a TV show, buy the whole season pass but don’t buy the HD version they show for $20+, click more options and buy the SD version that is normally $16 or less!

Let’s Recap: If you cut out your $50 cable bill and get Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime and don’t buy a single extra you will pay $24.23 for a savings of 50%. That’s a great deal! If you buy extras on Amazon even one TV show a month at $20 or more than your great deal goes to be about the same as you were paying before. To combat this, you can earn your free Amazon Gift Cards!

Have you switched from cable TV to the video streaming services? How much are you saving?

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
