Dairy-Free Milk Recipes + More Homemade Dairy-Free Substitutes

My oldest son is lactose intolerant. He is also the one who likes milk products more than any of the rest of us. Go figure! I try really hard to find dairy-free milk products that he can safely enjoy. I do buy some dairy-free and lactose-free products at the store, but I am always on the look out for delicious  dairy-free milk recipes that I can make at home.

Store-bought dairy-free products can be quite pricey, so I save money by making some dairy-free milk and dairy products at home. For the items that I buy at the store, I use the Favado App to help me save money. It has a feature where I can favorite certain brands which helps me find the best deals on those items.

Almond milk is my favorite dairy-free milk to use when baking. It has a little thicker consistency that matches the consistency of whole milk a little better than rice milk. Its flavor is easily hidden when used in recipes that already have a strong flavor like German Chocolate Cake.

When I am making something that has a milder flavor, I will use rice milk because its mild flavor is easier to disguise in the finished product.

I have mentioned disguising the flavor of dairy-free milk, but that isn’t because dairy-free milk tastes bad – its just a little different. And I don’t want it to change the feel or taste of our favorite baked goods. However, we all enjoy drinking dairy-free milk straight, especially almond milk. Below you will find a list of dairy-free milk recipes and homemade substitutes for other dairy products.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
