This easy garlic chicken recipe is a family favorite!

garlic chicken, rice, and broccoli on a plate

This garlic chicken recipe is quick, easy, and flexible. You can use chicken breasts, thighs, or chicken breast tenders. Whichever cut you use will turn out moist and tender because we use a different cooking method. We cook the chicken at high heat in a covered dish, so even chicken breasts will be tender and juicy.

How to Cook Chicken Breasts in the Oven

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Yes, really!

After you have applied the seasoning to the chicken, cover the dish with foil to lock in the moisture while it is baking.

After you place the covered dish in the oven turn down the heat to 400 degrees. Then let it bake for 30 – 40 minutes (depending on the thickness of the cuts of meat). Voila, you have magically tender chicken breasts!

How Long Does it Take to Bake Chicken?

The cooking time varies depending on the cut of chicken that you use, the thickness of the meat, and the temperature you bake the chicken at.

Cooking time for baked chicken using my method of preheating the oven to 450 degrees, then lowering it to 400 degrees once you place the chicken in the oven:

Whole chicken breasts typically take to 35 – 40 minutes.

Chicken thighs typically cook in 30 minutes.

Chicken breast tenders usually cook in 25 – 30 minutes.

This garlic chicken recipe makes enough for a crowd. When it is just my family of 5, we have leftovers. I use the leftover chicken in Chicken and Rice Soup, Chicken and Rice Bowls, and in Salads.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
