Saturday is Derby Day. My daughter became fascinated with horse racing when she was only seven years old. The stable where she took lessons also trained jockeys. My family fell in love with the fresh salsa at Baja Fresh. They were always trying to get me to make it, but I resisted because I couldn’t match that exact fresh salsa recipe. This Chicken and Greens with Tortellini Recipe is an easy one dish dinner. Yesterday I had a craving for greens cooked in bacon drippings. Sautéed Broccoli

April 26, 2011 by Alea Milham 3 Comments

I often wonder if I should share such easy recipes. Everybody knows how to sauté vegetables right? I didn’t until I was in my early twenties. While my mother did serve fresh salads with dinner, she usually just heated canned vegetables. So I was under the impression that I wasn’t very fond of vegetables. TheRead More

A couple weeks ago I made Chai Spiced Pudding which, as odd as it sounds, was a huge hit. I told my family that I was planning on experimenting with more pudding flavors and my daughter asked if I could try making mocha fudge pudding. As a college student she appreciates caffeinated desserts. 🙂 TodayRead More

April 11, 2011 by Alea Milham 7 Comments

Last week I was creating a recipe and decided that I needed 1 cup of tomato sauce. Since I was creating a recipe you would think I would use ingredients that I have on hand, but no, my imagination is bigger than my pantry. After searching to no avail for tomato sauce, I looked for someRead More

How I Wash Parsnips and Carrots

April 9, 2011 by Alea Milham 4 Comments

In my post on making chicken broth in a slow cooker, I demonstrated how I peel carrots right over the slow cooker if I don’t have scraps. A reader posted the following question:I was somewhat taken aback about the carrot peelings – seems like they are so hard to get clean since they sit inRead More

April 8, 2011 by Alea Milham 5 Comments

This evening I had a wild idea to make Chai Spiced Pudding, the only problem was that until tonight I had only made two types of pudding: chocolate and chocolate.  I was a little leery of just removing the chocolate from my recipes because I wasn’t sure how much the cocoa or chocolate chips affectedRead More

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
