How to Make Croutons - Recipe for Garlic and Herb Croutons. Plus quick and easy tips for making homemade croutons

This is a quick and easy crouton recipe that is made using sliced bread, olive oil, and spices.

How to make homemade garlic and her croutons - recipe and tips

Homemade croutons are so good! Croutons also happen to be easy to make and cost so much less than buying them from the store, especially if you make them with homemade bread. Making homemade croutons also gives you complete control over the ingredients, so you can choose a bread that meets with your dietary requirements.

I have included the basic recipe for how to make croutons from my cookbook Prep-Ahead Meals From Scratch below, but feel free to adapt it suit your taste or recipe needs. You can also scroll down to watch a video of me making homemade croutons, so you can see just how easy they are to make.

How to Make Homemade Croutons

You can make homemade croutons using any leftover bread including rolls, hamburger buns, leftover French bread, and even extra hot dog buns. But the easiest way to make croutons is to just pull out some slices of sandwich bread and use a pizza cutter to cut the bread into cubes before roasting the bread.

Crouton Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 8 – 12 slices of bread  (use gluten-free bread to make gluten-free croutons)
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon thyme or sage
  • 1 teaspoon parsley

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees.
  2. Lay bread on a large baking sheet. Brush the tops with olive oil. Then sprinkle with spices.
  3. Flit the pieces of bread over. Brush with olive oil and sprinkle remaining spices over the bread.
  4. Use a pizza cutter to quickly slice the bread into cubes. Use a pizza cutter to quickly cut bread into cubes when making croutons.
  5. Toss the cube bread to evenly distribute the spices. Then lay flat on the baking sheet.Quick and Easy Homemade Garlic and Onion Croutons made with bread slices, olive oil, and spices.
  6. Place the pan in the center of the oven. Bake at 450 degrees for 5 – 8 minutes or until they are brown.
  7. Toss every 2 -3 minutes to prevent the croutons from burning.
  8. Let the croutons cool on the baking sheet, the use as called for in recipes or store in a sealed container.

I use homemade croutons in the following recipes from my cookbook Prep-Ahead Meals From Scratch:

Bierock Soup (page 84)

French Onion Green Bean Casserole (page 169)

And of course, I use the leftover croutons to top our garden salads.

I just made these using loaf bread and they are great and just the right crunch for me. They are not the tooth breaking hard ones like you buy in the stores. I hope I have enough left for the pasta salad I am making because these are great for just snacking!!

Going to try this. I’ve made several other crouton recipes and have never been terribly happy with them. I like how you toast the bread there though and then cut it up…think it would be easier and work better!

Wondering what Gluten Free Bread you use? I was just diagnosed with Celiacs and am still trying to find a great bread recipe that I love that can be bought or even made.

When I use store bought bread I use Udi’s. Here is a good Udi’s copycat recipe: http://my-extraordinary-life.blogspot.com/2010/10/udis-bread-copy-cat-recipe-take-2.html

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
