School Bus Rice Krispies Treats

These School Bus Rice Krispies Treats make a fun dessert for back to school parties.

School Bus Rice Krispie Treats- These delightfully easy little school buses are the perfect treat for kids and teachers as they head back to school!

School is back in session and one of the best ways to start the year off right is some fun treats for kids and their teachers. These School Bus Rice Krispie Treats are fun to assemble and they will make your child’s or teacher’s day. Spend some time making these with your kids this evening for a fun back to school activity.

School Bus Rice Krispie Treats Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) butter
  • 2 10 ounce bags of marshmallows
  • 10 cups Rice Krispies cereal
  • 6 red M&M’s candies
  • 1 tablespoon solid shortening
  • 2/3 cup Wilton yellow candy melts
  • 3 large white Airhead candies
  • 12 mini Oreo cookies

Materials Needed:

  • School Bus cookie cutter
  • Wilton black icing gel tube
  • Wilton white icing gel tube

School Bus Rice Krispie Treats- ingredientsDirections:

1.   Spray a 9×9 pan with a non-stick coating spray and set aside.
2.   In a large sauce pan, melt the butter over low heat.
3.   Add the marshmallows and stir constantly until melted.
4.   Remove from the heat and stir in the cereal until well-coated.
5.   Transfer the cereal mixture to your prepared pan and press down firmly to even out.
6.   Cool for 30 minutes.

How to Assemble the School Bus Rice Krispie Treats:

1. Line a large cookie sheet with wax or parchment paper and set aside.

2. Using the school bus cookie cutter, cut out 6 school bus shapes from your prepared Rice Krispies. Try to cut them out as close together as possible. Place on cookie sheet.
3. In a microwave-safe bowl, microwave the solid shortening for 45 seconds. Add the yellow chocolate candy melts and stir until completely melted and smooth.
4. With a small spatula, spread a thin layer of the yellow chocolate on top of each Rice Krispies school bus cut-out. Place back on the cookie sheet for 15 minutes to allow the chocolate to harden.

5. Pull apart the mini Oreo cookies and dab a small amount of icing (you can use the black or the white) on the back of each cookie that doesn’t have the filling on it and attach to the bottom of each bus.
6. Cut each Airhead candy piece in half, lengthwise. Next, cut each half piece into 5 evenly shaped squares. These will be the school bus windows.

7. With the white tube of icing gel, pipe a small amount of icing on the back of each “window” and place on each Rice Krispies treat. You will place 4 on each school bus.
8. With the black icing tube, pipe a line lengthwise across the school bus (right underneath the windows) and place a red M&M on the black line for the stop sign.School Bus Rice Krispie Treats- add details with icing and M&Ms

9. Dab a small amount of white icing in the middle of each “wheel.” Place back on cookie sheet for 15 minutes to harden.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
