My Menu Was Hijacked By a Snow Storm

February 22, 2010 by Alea Milham 2 Comments

I am afraid that I spent more time feeding all of the animals on our property yesterday than I did my family. After fixing the horses heated water buckets, my husband jumped in and made waffles. There was much snacking on cookies and cocoa and we made a dinner of leftovers and popcorn, so nobodyRead More

Strawberry jam sweetened with honey canned in 16 oz mason jar.

Strawberry Jam Sweetened with Honey

February 19, 2010 by Alea Milham 6 Comments

Here is a bit of a project with a great payoff – making strawberry jam sweetened with honey. I experimented with making jam from frozen strawberries from last fall’s harvest. The berries were not very sweet so I compensated by adding honey. The jam took longer to set than when I have made jam withRead More

Beef stew in a bowl

Beef Stew

February 18, 2010 by Alea Milham 5 Comments

Here is a very easy recipe for a delicious and filling beef stew. I like to save the broth from Swiss Steak and use it to make a hardy stew. Sometimes, I refrigerate the broth and follow with stew  a couple of days after I make Swiss Steak. However, I usually freeze the broth andRead More

Sauteed Green Cauliflower

Sautéed Green Cauliflower

February 15, 2010 by Alea Milham 5 Comments

Green cauliflower, sometimes called broccoflower, is one of my favorite vegetables. It was readily available when we lived in Southern California, but now it is rare to find it in grocery stores, making it a special treat. It has the texture of cauliflower, but is more flavorful.   Sautéed Green Cauliflower Recipe Ingredients: 2 TablespoonsRead More

My First Garden Purchase of the Year

February 12, 2010 by Alea Milham 3 Comments

We have spent the last couple of weeks alternating between snow days and sunny 45 degree days. The warm sunny days make me start itching for spring, but I know that the night time temperatures will regularly drop below freezing until early May.  So I consoled myself with the impulse purchase of two 3 footRead More

Easy Way to Roll Out Shortbread or Sugar Cookies + Shortbread Recipe

February 12, 2010 by Alea Milham 12 Comments

The great thing about Shortbread, besides the fact that it is made of pantry staples, is that your children can pretend it is Lembas Bread. The bad thing about shortbread is trying to roll it out! After discussing the problems of rolling out shortbread with a friend, I decided to post pictures of how IRead More

Pressure cooker pork and sauerkraut recipe with sweet potatoes

Pork, Sauerkraut, and Sweet Potatoes – Pressure Cooker Recipe

February 10, 2010 by Alea Milham 14 Comments

I combined elements of two of my favorite pork and sauerkraut recipes, impulsively added sweet potatoes and in the process created a new family favorite. Pressure Cooker Pork and Sauerkraut Recipe with Sweet Potatoes While the meat is browning, I chop the vegetables. After the meat is browned, put it in the pressure cooker (Read More

Uncooked spaghetti noodle inserted into bundt cake - goes deeper than a toothpick - to determine doneness.

Testing Doneness of Bundt Cakes

February 9, 2010 by Alea Milham 13 Comments

Usually recipes instruct you to insert a toothpick, and if it comes out clean, the cake is done.  That’s fine for a 2 inch deep cake pan, but how do you test the doneness of a Bundt cake?  A toothpick barely makes a dent in a Bundt cake or loaf pan. I have a 6Read More

Tomato Soup Cake

February 3, 2010 by Alea Milham 15 Comments

This old-fashioned tomato soup cake recipe tastes like a spice cake. You can cook this vintage cake recipe in a loaf pan or in a cake pan.   This cake tastes much better than it sounds! This recipe originated in the late 1920s or early 1930s. It was enormously popular throughout the depression as itRead More

February is National Bird Feeding Month

February 2, 2010 by Alea Milham 2 Comments

February is National Bird Feeding Month. The end of winter is the hardest time for birds to find food, unless of course you are a bird of prey! We love watching the many birds of prey in our area, except when they are dining on cute little song birds! We think it is a NorthernRead More

slow cooker split pea soup recipe made with sherry and a ham bone

Crock Pot Split Pea Soup

February 2, 2010 by Alea Milham 6 Comments

This Crock Pot Split Pea Soup recipe is enhanced by the addition of sherry and ham.   Whenever we have ham, I save the ham bone and freeze it. What looks like trash to some people is the perfect flavoring for Split Pea Soup. You would be surprised at how much meat is actually onRead More

No Frivolous Spending

February 1, 2010 by Alea Milham 6 Comments

My husband describes are pledge to buy nothing new for an entire year as our “year of not buying anything frivolous”. He has an interesting interpretation. You could follow the guidelines of The Compact and still spend a lot of money on used things that you don’t really need. Since we are planning on movingRead More

Menu Plan Monday – Week of February 1

February 1, 2010 by Alea Milham Leave a Comment

One of my resolutions for this year was to bake more items from scratch. I mix up a batch of dough which makes enough for 4 – 1 pound loves or 3 loaves of bread and 2 pizzas. I wanted to share the recipe I have been using, but did not want to violateRead More

Signs of Life

January 29, 2010 by Alea Milham 4 Comments

A couple days of rain have melted the snow and I was delighted to find signs of life in my garden. I am amazed because we had night time lows of negative 10 degrees and I did little if anything to protect the plants. I truly expected my strawberries to die. They have survived previousRead More

Debbie Meyer Green Bags

January 27, 2010 by Alea Milham 8 Comments

I am such a skeptic, that I never would have tried Debbie Meyer Green Bags if a friend did not give me a box. Even then, I am embarrassed to say, the box of Green Bags sat on top of my refrigerator for a couple of months before I tried them. Last week their wasRead More

Pulling Pork

Crock Pot Pulled Pork

January 26, 2010 by Alea Milham 10 Comments

Pulled Pork, Barbecue Beef, and Chicken are really easy in the crock pot. So easy, that I feel real guilty when people compliment me on it. I make all of them the same way, but since I have a picture of Pulled Pork, that is what I am going to talk about. I often makeRead More

Menu Plan Monday

January 25, 2010 by Alea Milham 1 Comment

The pantry and freezer are looking a little bare. I have to plan carefully because I am out of some of my regular items like any type of white bean to make White Chili or  Vegetable Garden Minestrone Soup (two of our family favorites!). I am also out of pinto beans, tapioca flour andRead More

My .99 Cent Workout

January 20, 2010 by Alea Milham 9 Comments

Usually my resolutions are very easy to keep: eat more chocolate, host more game nights, laugh more… But for some reason this year I have made some pretty big resolutions. In addition to committing to not buying anything new for a year, and making money while decluttering my house, I have resolved to exercise regularly.Read More

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
