Call me practical, but I prefer receiving plants over flowers for their staying power!  If you agree, you should check out these 7 Plants to Give for Valentine’s Day Instead of Flowers.

7 plants to give for Valentine's Day instead of flowers.

Flowers are gorgeous and fun to send for Valentine’s Day, but the truth is they will wilt and die within a week. That doesn’t seem like a lot of bang for your budget, does it? If you want to send your valentine something that will last them longer, a plant is a better option. Take a look below at 7 plants to send for Valentine’s Day that will last all year.

7 Plants to Give for Valentine’s Day Instead of Flowers

Your sweetheart will love to receive one of these plants and enjoy it all year long instead of a week at most. Here are 7 plant ideas to get you started.

1. Orchids

Who doesn’t love an orchid? The hybrid varieties created today are gorgeous and easy to care for. Choose from hundreds of varieties, colors, and sizes. If your valentine loves all things exotic, an orchid may be the perfect plant for them.

2. Rosemary

Not only does rosemary smell amazing, but your Valentine will be able to use the herb in their cooking as well! Send your loved one a rosemary plant, which looks gorgeous, smells yummy, and is practical for use in the kitchen, no matter what the occasion is.

3. Lavender

Lavender is much like rosemary in the sense that it smells amazing, is easy to grow, and is so practical! It can be used in crafting and cooking so if you know a particularly creative person this is the perfect plant for them. You can choose from several varieties of lavender, and most will give off sweet little purple blooms all through the year.

4. Peace Lily

People often think of these as funeral flowers, but the truth is they are great for any occasion. They are easy to care for, offer lovely white blooms, and will last year round. Send a peace lily to someone you love and they are sure to think of you each time a new bloom opens.

5. Household Fern

Household ferns are easy to care for and offer gorgeous color. They look great in hanging baskets or in a sunny window. They can also help improve the quality of your household air, which is another reason worth keeping a few on hand. Snake plants and English Ivy are also good at purifying the air. These plants are a good choice if your sweetheart is health conscious.

6. Succulents

Succulents have become so popular as of late, and the truth is they are quite hardy and easy to grow. They multiply nicely too, so you can always thin them out and give the extras away as gifts later. Give your valentine a sweet little succulent garden which is sure to be enjoyed! One of my favorite succulents to give is Aloe, because it is easy to grow, but also it can be used to treat burns.

7. Tulips

Tulips are sold in planters during February in an assortment of lovely colors. If your sweetheart is a gardener, they can transfer the tulips to their garden where they will bloom again every year. Hyacinths and irises are also sold in planters this time of year.

Are you ready to give your Valentine something that is sure to last? Choose one of these plants over fresh cut flowers this year and see how they are a gift that keeps on giving.

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
