The last couple of years, I have seen many people do alternatives to the traditional Christmas tree for one reason or another. For some, it’s because they will be traveling for most of the holiday season and don’t want to mess with it. For others, it’s a lack of money to buy one and put one up. Some are allergic to pine trees. Some people have cats or toddlers and don’t want to risk a traditional tree falling over. Those with limited space may be looking for something a tree that takes up less space. And still some folks just want something a little different. Whatever your reason, if you are one of many people who don’t feel like vacuuming needles for weeks into January, here are some great Christmas tree alternatives.

Christmas Tree Alternatives

String lights on the wall in the shape of a tree like Behind the Big Green Door did. This one is perfect for someone who wants to look at the lights, but not bother with the tree.

I love how this Palette Tree from Mon Makes Things lights up! She says it is a simple thing to make, too.

Make your own Christmas Tree from Cardboard from Makedo via Instructables with all those packages you might be getting in the mail now from all that shopping online.

Get a lot of Christmas cards and don’t know where to display them? Make this cool Washi Tape Card Tree with the instructions at DIY Candy.

For a more minimalist look (and a very, very low price tag), try this string Christmas tree card holder. It looks like it could easily hold lightweight ornaments too.

I like the look of this Rustic Christmas Tree by Her Tool Belt. It can be made from reclaimed wood and it looks so nice.

For those that love ornaments, this Ornament Tree is a good way to display them without the tree. See the instructions at Purple Hues and Me.

Martha and Tom have a great tutorial on how to create a tree made from dowels to hang your ornaments on.

I kind of have a “thing” with chicken wire, so although this Chicken Wire tree from A Diamond in the Stuff isn’t a very big one, I wanted to include it.

This Kid Friendly Tree  from I can Teach My Child is perfect to keep little ones from touching all the shiny decorations around the house. They can redecorate their tree over and over.

This Palette Tree from Affirmaison is so simple; it requires no woodworking skills, just some paint and ornaments!

These are great alternatives to the traditional tree. We almost didn’t get one last year because we nearly ran out of time!

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
