These DIY scented fire starters contain cinnamon, cloves, and allspice to give your home a lovely holiday scent.

These cute little DIY scented fire starters are made mostly from items that would probably be tossed in the trash. However, when they are repurposed and packaged in these fire starters, they become useful and smell amazing. Take them along on your next camping trip, toss a couple in the fireplace or in your backyard fire pit to help get your blaze going, and they will put out a wonderful spicy scent into the air. This is a simple project that kids make right alongside you. If you want to craft a bunch, put out a call to family and friends to save their toilet paper rolls and dryer lint. They may think you are a bit odd but when they see the final result they may not share their “trash” anymore.

 DIY Scented Fire Starters

Supplies needed:

  • Empty toilet paper rolls
  • Newspaper
  • Dryer lint
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Whole cloves
  • Whole allspice
  • Bakers twine

Directions:

Cut newspaper into 11″ wide strips, I just kept the newspaper at its full length.

Slip a cinnamon stick in each roll, fill it halfway with lint, and pack it in well. Then place 2 tsp. cloves and 2 tsp. allspice in the tube. Continue packing the rest of the tube with lint.

Roll newspaper tightly around the roll and tie off each end.

A big metal basket of these would be a great housewarming gift for a home with a fireplace or can be placed next to your own hearth. Take some along as a hostess gift or pack some up to take with you on your next camping trip to enhance the scents around you.

I think these DIY scented fire starters are lovely and a great way to reuse items that would just otherwise end up in the trash.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
