Saving money on your laundry can be done easily once you know a few different ways to do so. These Ways to Save Money on Laundry are a great place to start.

Laundry is one of those chores that most everyone hates, but is a necessity in daily life. Laundry is also one of the areas of your budget that can be hard to see ways to save money in. It tends to be one of those areas where we easily overlook ways to save simply because we are constantly doing it. It is a part of our normal lives and as such, we become blind to how much it can cost us.

Saving money on your laundry can be done easily though once you’ve taken the time to search out the different ways to do so. These 7 Ways to Save Money on Laundry are a great place to start.

Ways to Save Money on Laundry

Watch your load size. When you do a load of laundry, make sure that you’re doing a full load. If you’re not, you’re filling up the washer and wasting water. Wasted water means wasted money. Instead of wasting that money, only wash when you have a full load. If you find that you need to wash smaller loads such as with delicate laundry, picking up a hand washer can save you quite a bit.

Wash only in cold water. Washing in hot water all the time not only uses more energy but it can be bad on your clothes too. Washing in cold is cheaper and will help your clothes look better. Most detergents will do just as well in cold water as warm/hot, but if you’re too concerned with it, you can always use a detergent made for cold water use.

Line dry when you can. Your dryer is the most expensive appliance that you own so by using it less, you will obviously save money. In warmer weather, use a clothesline to dry your clothes since there isn’t a better way to dry them than free. In cooler weather, you can still line dry them by using an indoor clothes drying rack.

Use your dryer during off peak times. If you must use your dryer, make sure that you’re using it mostly during off peak times. Power companies will often charge more per kw/h (kilowatt hour) during peak usage times meaning that your dryer will be costing you even more than it normally does. By drying earlier or later than these times, you’ll save a bit of money.

Make your own laundry products. One big way to save money on laundry is to make your own laundry products. You can make homemade laundry detergent for pennies on the dollar and homemade fabric softener is just as cheap. By making your own, you’ll cut the high dollar detergent out of your budget almost completely. Here is an easy recipe for Homemade Laundry Soap.

And go natural for the most budget friendly. If you don’t want to make your own fabric softener, vinegar works as an amazing substitute. It is also great at removing odors. At less than $2.00 per gallon on average, vinegar will cost you only pennies per load saving you quite a bit of money each year.

Buy generic when you can. If you must buy laundry detergent and other supplies, consider buying something other than those super expensive brands. Just because something is a generic brand doesn’t mean that it isn’t a fantastic alternative.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
