One good thing about bananas is that they are almost always cheap and in season, even the organic kind. They are the perfect portable fruit and have a wonderful sweet taste kids love. In fact, we nick-named my daughter “The Banana Queen” for a period because she loved bananas so much. I seemed to never be able to keep up with her in my grocery shopping.
As The Banana Queen moved on, I started noticing that I had all kinds of bananas going to my freezer because they weren’t being eaten up as quickly. If you find yourself with lots of bananas on hand, here are helpful tips on storing them as well as 14 Banana Recipes to use them in.
How to Keep Bananas Fresh
There are many banana tips and hacks out there, but one that I have found that really helps is to wrap the banana stems in plastic wrap and then hang them on a banana holder. Mine was a simple one I found down at the thrift store. Never store bananas in the fridge, though, as this only speeds up the browning process.
How to Store Brown Bananas for Later Use
Many people peel bananas for storing in the freezer, but I find that just popping them in the freezer in the peel works just as well. When you are ready to use them in recipes, simply pull them out and they will be thawed in 15 minutes or less. If you want to use them for smoothies later, I do recommend peeling them, and storing them in plastic for this use as you would want frozen bananas for this.
