No, I did not marinate my sweet potatoes in tea. Did you realize that the overpriced tea you buy from coffee shops is just black tea with spices, sugar, and milk added? You probably have most of the spices in your cupboard to make Homemade Chai Tea. Or you could use those same spices to make Chai Spice and then use the spice mix to season sweet potatoes!

My family is not a fan of candied yams that are traditionally served on Thanksgiving. We prefer to buy fresh “yams” or sweet potatoes from the produce section and roast them for holiday dinners. This easy side dish is sweetened with honey and apple juice to add a little sweetness and coated with spices to give it a uniquely delicious flavor.

Sweet Potatoes or Yams

Sweet potatoes and yams are often confused with each other, especially in  America where “yam” is often used as a name for a type of sweet potato with orange flesh. True yams originate in Africa. So when you shop for this recipe, you can choose either white-fleshed sweet potatoes or the orange-fleshed sweet potatoes called yams.

How long to cook sweet potatoes?

How long you cook sweet potato pieces depends on the temperature you choose to cook them at and the size of your pieces. I cut my sweet potatoes into bite-size pieces, so it only takes 30 minutes to cook them at 400°F. If you cut yams into large chunks, it could take 40 – 45 minutes for them to cook.

Prep-Ahead Tips:

You can cut your sweet potatoes the day before and place them in a sealable bag with a little water to keep them moist. You can also coat your cut yams with the honey-chai mixture and place them in a lidded bowl. Transfer them to the casserole dish right before placing it in the oven.

Chai Spiced Sweet Potatoes Recipe

This sweet potato recipe has a unique flavor and makes a delicious addition to holiday dinners.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 10 cups of cut sweet potatoes or “yams”, approximately 3 large sweet potatoes
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 5 teaspoons chai spice
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened apple juice (just apple juice without any additives)

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Coast a 13×9 casserole dish with olive oil.

2. Wash, dry, and cut sweet potatoes into bite-size pieces. You don’t need to peel sweet potatoes. Place the sweet potato pieces into the greased casserole dish.

4. Drizzle the honey-chai mixture over the sweet potatoes. Toss to ensure the pieces are evenly coated.

6. Remove from the oven and toss one more time before serving.

Storage Tips:

Place leftover sweet potatoes in a container with a lid. They can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or the freezer for 3 months.

Hi Alea my love! Yes! A few years back an Indian friend of mine shared the "secret ingredients" in chai tea with me, though my version adds in star anise for a bit more of a liquorice flavor. Not sure that would work well with these sweet potatoes, but the mix you are using sounds divine! So warming and lovely on a cold winter's day! Thanks so much for sharing this on the hearth and soul hop this week! All the best and big hugs too! Alex

I have been meaning to look up a chai tea recipe for weeks now. I'm looking forward to see the recipe on Friday! And the potatoes look delicious, I never would have thought to add them to potatoes. Looks yummy!

Mmm, all of those warming spices, especially cardamom, what a great pairing with sweet potatoes. I bet everyone gobbles this up. Do they crisp at up at all? I don't have any sweet potatoes, but I do have some butternut squash, and I think my family will love your recipe. Thanks for sharing with the Hearth and Soul hop.

I am looking forward to the chai tea recipe…and eager to see if all the spices dissolve, unlike the last one I tried. Sediment in the bottom of the cup is not enjoyable, so I went back to the $4/canister Pacific Chai.

Interesting about the chai, but I would agree that's true. Another potato recipe for me to try, sounds like a winner.
