A classic Chocolate Covered Strawberries Recipe is a great addition to your romantic plans for your next date night.
When rich dark chocolate meets fresh juicy strawberries in this Chocolate Coated Strawberries Recipe you get an amazing combo that makes any occasion more special. As soon as strawberries are in season I can’t wait to work them into my favorite recipes, starting with this one. Smooth, rich chocolate and sweet, juicy berries, who wouldn’t enjoy this treat?
Tips for Making Chocolate Covered Strawberries
1. Make sure your strawberries are completely dry. The chocolate will not adhere properly if your strawberries are not dry.
2. You will need to thin your melted chocolate to dipping consistency by adding coconut oil or shortening.
3. Be sure you have parchment paper, wax paper, or a silicone mat set out before you start dipping. You want to set your chocolate covered strawberries on a surface that will allow you to easily remove the strawberries once the chocolate has hardened.
4. If you want to add sprinkles or jimmies to your chocolate-dipped strawberries, do so while the chocolate is still wet.
5. If you want to drizzle more chocolate over the chocolate-coated strawberries, wait until the chocolate has completely hardened after dipping the strawberries, then drizzle the additional chocolate over the top.
Chocolate Covered Strawberries – Microwave Method
Making chocolate covered strawberries is even easier if you use the microwave to melt the chocolate instead of using a double boiler on the stovetop.
- Place the chocolate in a microwave-safe dish.
- Melt the chocolate in 20 – 30 second bursts in the microwave, stirring in between each reheating.
- If your melted chocolate is not thin enough for dipping, add 1 teaspoon of coconut oil or shortening. Stir it in, then check the consistency of the chocolate. If needed add another teaspoon or two of coconut oil or shortening until it is the desired consistency for dipping berries.

This is a basic recipe for chocolate-covered strawberries. You will find printable directions at the bottom of this post. You will also find 12 variations to inspire you to create your own unique chocolate strawberries if you wish.
Ingredients:
- 16 ounces strawberries
- 1 cup dark chocolate chips, milk chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, or candy melts
- 1 teaspoon – 1 tablespoon coconut oil or shortening
Directions:
- Line a clean surface (a cookie sheet or cutting board) with parchment paper and set aside.
- Wash and dry your strawberries. It is very important that your strawberries are dry so they don’t make the chocolate “break” and get clumpy.
- Melt the chocolate in 25-second bursts in the microwave, stirring in between each reheating. Add a bit of coconut oil or shortening if your chocolate is not smooth.
- Holding the green stem of the strawberry, roll your strawberry in melted chocolate and then place on your prepared surface. Let the strawberries set completely before serving or packaging.
- You can add sprinkles or drizzle on some white chocolate for effect.
How to Store Chocolate Covered Strawberries
Storing at Room Temperature
To store your strawberries at room temperature, lightly cover them with foil or plastic wrap. Don’t store them in an airtight container because if they are kept in an airtight container at room temperature, they will decompose faster than if they were just lightly covered.
Storing in the Refrigerator
To store chocolate covered berries in the refrigerator, lightly cover them in wax paper, then place them in an airtight container.
How Long do Chocolate Covered Strawberries Last?
Chocolate-dipped strawberries are best if eaten the day they are made. They will last 12 – 24 hours at room temperature. However, after 12 hours they may start to leak strawberry juice and won’t look as pretty, but they will still taste delicious.
You can place your chocolate-dipped strawberries in the refrigerator for 2 days, but placing them in the refrigerator will cause condensation to form on the chocolate, so this method isn’t best if you want to serve them to guests.
