This Cornmeal Crusted Fried Green Tomato Fries recipe is a delicious way to use up your green tomatoes

Cornmeal Crusted Fried Green Tomato Fries Recipe - Put a yummy spin on fried green tomatoes with these green tomato fries. Cornmeal adds the perfect crunch!

Being from the South I love a good traditional fried green tomato, and sometimes I like to switch them up a bit and add some new flavor.  I was making a few things with cornmeal the other day and thought they might make a great breading for fried green tomatoes. While I was at it, I thought I would also turn them into fries instead of the usual slices. Both worked out even better than I hoped, so I had to share them with you so you could try them for yourself.

This makes a small batch. You can double, triple, or quadruple the recipe when serving a larger crowd.

Ingredients:

  • 1 green tomato
  • 1/2 cup fine cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (use rice flour to make these gluten-free)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 2 teaspoons hot sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
  • oil for frying

Directions:

  1. Heat 1/4″ of oil in a large saucepan.
  2. Place rice flour, pepper, and garlic salt in one shallow container until combined.
  3. In a second container whisk together egg, milk, and hot sauce.
  4. Finally, in a third shallow container spread out the corn meal.Cornmeal Crusted Fried Green Tomato Fries dredging
  5. Slice green tomatoes roughly 1/2″ thick, then cut into strips.
  6. Dredge them in the rice flour, then egg mixture, and then the cornmeal mixture.Cornmeal Crusted Fried Green Tomato Fries coating
  7. Fry on one side for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Flip and brown on the other for 1-2 minutes.Cornmeal Crusted Fried Green Tomato Fries frying
  8. Drain on a paper towel lined plate.

The cornmeal adds an extra thick and crunchy coating to these fries.  I serve them with a homemade Sweet Buffalo Dip. Be sure to check out that recipe for a tangy dipping sauce!

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
