Family meals and dinner rolls go together like…well…bread and butter! Sometimes, inundated with Parmesan encrusted this and pesto filled that, we yearn for something simple, like a big fluffy dinner roll with a pat of butter–and maybe some raspberry jam.
I love a roll made with comfort-food ingredients like butter, white flour, and buttermilk. These rolls are soft and tender, with a flaky golden brown crust and are a little bit of heaven.
So if you are looking for a simple dinner rolls recipe, here is one that is sure the please your entire family.
Dinner Rolls Recipe
Ingredients:
- 4 teaspoons sugar, divided
- 1 cup very warm water
- 1 package active dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon softened butter
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 3 1/2 cups white bread flour
Directions:
Combine 1 teaspoon sugar, water, and yeast together in a large bowl. Allow the mixture to sit until slightly bubbly – about 5 minutes.
Add the butter, egg, buttermilk, salt, and 2 cups of the flour. Beat for 1 minute.
Add the remaining flour gradually, using just enough to make the dough come cleanly away from the side of the bowl.
Knead by machine (using a dough hook) for 5-6 minutes or by hand for 7-8 minutes. Dough should be very soft and elastic.
Generously grease or butter a large bowl. Place dough in bowl and turn to coat dough completely. Cover and let rise until doubled – about 1 hour.
Grease (or us an oil-flour spray) a 9-inch by 13-inch baking pan.
Punch down dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape into smooth balls and place in prepared pan. Cover and let rise until doubled – about 1 hour.
For a more rustic look, use a small fine-mesh sifter or tea strainer to sprinkle flour over the top of the rolls before baking. You can also give the rolls a rich, shiny appearance by brushing them lightly with an egg wash (1 egg and 1 tablespoon water, whisked together) before baking.
Heat oven to 375 F.
Bake 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
