We have a large pear tree. Each year I enjoy using pears in a variety of recipes, including my pressure cooker pear sauce and Jody’s homemade spiced pear butter. ~Alea
During the fall I love the various fruits and spices that make an appearance like apples, pumpkin, and cinnamon. Sometimes I love to mix up my recipes with something a little different that may not be your typical fall fare. Pears come in the height of the season at the end of summer right on through fall, making them an ideal fruit for many recipes.
I like to season the pears up with cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg and cook them down into delicious pear butter. It is excellent not only spread over toast, but also spooned over ice cream and mixed into smoothies. You can also put it on a peanut butter sandwich, use it as a waffle topping, and so much more.
This recipe uses fresh ginger to give it a little more “bite”. Homemade Spiced Pear Butter also makes a wonderful hostess gift or just because gift packaged up in a pretty mason jar with a bit of twine and a simple label.
Homemade Spiced Pear Butter Recipe
Ingredients:
- 4-5 pears
- 2 teaspoons lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp fresh ginger, finely chopped or grated
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
Directions:
- Peel and dice pears.
- Place pears, lemon juice, maple syrup, brown sugar, ginger slice, nutmeg, and salt in a medium-sized saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil.
- Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 30 minutes with the lid slightly ajar.
- Remove fresh ginger slice and use an immersion blender or mash by hand. Simmer an additional 10 minutes.
- Transfer mixture to a jar with a tight fitting lid and store for up to 2 weeks.
I like to divide mine up into small 4-ounce mason jars and gift them.
*Note- You can use 1/2 tsp. ground ginger in place of fresh ginger but the fresh gives it such a nice, bright flavor that I like to use it whenever I can. You can purchase a small piece in the produce section of your favorite grocery store and keep it in the freezer until needed to extend the life.

Hi. Is there a substitute for maple syrup? And is nutmeg essential?
Alea Milham says
You could use honey in place of maple syrup. You can also leave the nutmeg out if you wish.
