how to make whipped coffe - the tik tok famous dalgona coffee recipe

Did you see the Whipped Coffee video on Tik Tok or somewhere else on the internet? My friend Nik shared how to make Whipped Coffee with me. Check out how easy this Dalgona Coffee recipe is to make.

How to make whipped coffee using the Dalgona coffee recipe.

What is Dalgona Coffee?

Dalgona coffee is a whipped coffee that has a similar texture to a thick whipped cream. It is served over iced milk (iced latte) or warm milk (warm latte).

The name “Dalgona coffee” is attributed to the South Korean actor Jung Il-woo, who ordered a whipped coffee at a restaurant in Macau. He compared the taste of the whipped coffee to that of dalgona, a type of Korean foamed candy which is similar to American honeycomb candy.

This coffee drink also resembles the Indian beverage known as phenti hui coffee (or beaten coffee). The difference between beaten coffee and whipped coffee is that when making phenti hui, milk is poured on top of the whipped mix rather than spooning the whipped mix on top of the milk. So feel free to try it both ways!

How to Make Whipped Coffee

Whipped coffee is made of equal parts of instant coffee crystals, sugar, and hot water.

To make enough to top one cup, beat 1 tablespoon of instant coffee, 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar, and 1 tablespoon of very hot water until it forms peaks.

Then spoon your whipped coffee over a cup of iced milk or warm milk, whichever you prefer.

There is a printable recipe below.

Can you use coffee grounds instead of instant coffee to make Dalgona Coffee?

While Instant Coffee Crystals works best, you can use coffee grounds. However, using coffee beans or ground coffee is much more expensive, more work, and time-consuming. The instant coffee crystals add body to the water, so it easier to whip. It takes 2 – 4 times as long to whip the coffee if you don’t use Instant Coffee, so I don’t recommend it. Trust me on this and go pick up some instant coffee crystals or better yet, have some delivered to you.

If you are really set on making whipped coffee with coffee grounds, reread the above paragraph. If you think you are just too cool for instant coffee, then pick up instant espresso crystals instead. It makes an even stronger and bolder whipped coffee.

Do I have to use a mixer?

No, you do not have to have a stand mixer or a hand mixer to make whipped coffee. You can use a whisk to whip it by hand. It is even possible to use a blender to make Delgona coffee.

How long does it take to make whipped coffee?

The time can vary depending on which method you have chosen to beat your coffee. A stand mixer can take 1 – 2 minutes to whip coffee, while a hand mixer takes a little longer 2 – 3 minutes. Using a whisk to hand whip your coffee takes 7 – 8 minutes. If you use a whisk, alternate beating it back and forth and then left to right, instead of just in a circle or it could take even longer. In a blender, it will take 3 – 6 minutes to whip your coffee, depending on your brand and the setting you choose.

Do I have to use granulated sugar to make Dalgona coffee?

No, you don’t have to use granulated sugar when making whipped coffee. You can use powder sugar, brown sugar, or coconut sugar in this recipe.

You can also use granulate sugar substitutes such as one for one replacement stevia. However, and this is a big however, the whipped coffee’s texture is not as firm and it doesn’t hold its peaks as well. If you don’t use either a traditional sugar or coconut sugar, it will become watery is a short amount of time, so you have to use Delgona coffee right away.

What kind of milk should you use with your whipped coffee?

Serve your whipped coffee over whatever type of iced milk or warm milk you prefer. You can use whole, 2%, 1%, non-fat, goat milk, or my personal favorites Vanilla Almond Milk or Vanilla Coconut Milk. It can also be served over any nut milk, rice milk, hemp milk, or even oat milk.
