6 Things to do Memorial Weekend in the Reno Area

Looking for something fun to do this Memorial Day holiday weekend?  Well you’re in luck because there are some fabulous and frugal activities in the Reno Tahoe area for the whole family.

Family Friendly Memorial Day Events

Here is just a small example of the Memorial Day Events going on in Northern Nevada:

Celebration of Heroes Parade

Saturday, May 28th
Virginia City

The Comstock are honoring all the men and women of the military who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country the weekend of Memorial Day. Join us as we pay tribute to the great service men and women.  It is free to the public.  Parade starts at Noon.

Nevada State Railroad Museum

Saturday through Monday, May 28 – 30
10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Carson City

Visit the steam locomotive as it operates this Memorial Day weekend at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City. Round trips from Wabuska Station are $8 for adults and $4 for kids 4 to 11. Under 4 are free.  Call (775) 687-6953 for more information.

Ride the V&T Railroad

Saturday through Sunday, May 28th-29th
Carson City Depot
10 a.m.

Arrive early, there will be live music, mimosas and free face painting for children, then enjoy a relaxing and scenic ride to Virginia City, where dining, shopping and Old West history abound.  Visit VTrailWay.com for more information and tickets.

Idlewild Park Train

Saturday through Sunday, May 28th-29th
Idlewild Park
11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The mini train will start running this Memorial Day weekend. The fare is $2 per person (cash only.) Kids 2 and under ride free on an adult lap.

Made in Tahoe Festival

Saturday through Sunday, May 28th-29th
The Village at Squaw Valley
Starting at 11 a.m.

The 3rd Annual Made In Tahoe Festival will be happening in Tahoe, come look for lots of vendor booths providing an opportunity to shop local and see what the community is creating. Hand crafted ceramics to clothing and home apparel to photography. The event includes live music from local bands and musicians and numerous choices of food and drink. The weekend also marks the opening of the Aerial Tram for the summer season.

Black Rock Rendezvous

Friday through Monday, May 27th-30th
The Village at Squaw Valley
Starting at 11 a.m.

Come to this is a free, family-friendly event and learn about the incredible Black Rock Desert this is a weekend with environmental workshops, tours of significant area features, history, camping, a variety of presentations, a fun Kids Camp, rocket launches, volunteer opportunities, and singing under starry desert skies.  The main Rendezvous events start on Saturday, May 28, 100 miles north of Reno at the campsite on the Black Rock Plaza. A schedule of events, directions, and maps are available at the Black Rock Rendezvous website.

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
