This easy recipe is inspired by Tamilyn at Butter My Kitchen. It makes use of boxed mixes to speed up the prep time. One of the things I like about Betty Crocker Gluten Free mixes is that, unlike most gluten free mixes, they include high altitude directions. If you live at altitude you will needRead More

My Favorite Drought Tolerant Plant: Russian Sage

July 30, 2010 by Alea Milham 3 Comments

Russian Sage is hands down my favorite drought tolerant plant. Not only does it require little water and lots of sun, but it can handle the temperature extremes that exist in the high desert. No fertilizer for these plants; they thrive in poor soil, of which I have plenty! Its long spikes of purple flowers openRead More

Using Leftover Taco Meat to Make Enchiladas

July 30, 2010 by Alea Milham 10 Comments

Last week I had a mixture of seasoned hamburger and black beans leftover from Taco Salad that I used as a base to make enchiladas. If you are starting from scratch, I would suggest browning 1/2 pound of hamburger, then add 1 cup of cooked beans and 1 tablespoon of your favorite taco seasoning. MakingRead More

My Square Foot Gardens

July 27, 2010 by Alea Milham 15 Comments

I have spent most of the spring and summer lamenting the condition and rate of production of my raised bed gardens, so it only seems fair that I should share the positive developments. I am beginning to harvest raspberries: It won’t be long before I am harvesting blackberries:I am regularly picking tomatoes, which are addedRead More

July 27, 2010 by Alea Milham 18 Comments

This Cowgirl Caviar Recipe is a honey-lime variation on Cowboy Caviar. Black-eyed peas are usually associated with Hoppin’ John, which is a traditional New Year’s Day meal in the South. On the first day of the year, you eat “poor”, so that you may eat “well” the rest of the year. However, black-eyed peas areRead More

I love my Daylilies! They grow in all types of soil conditions as long as it is well drained. They prefer sun, but tolerate shade. They winter well and can survive extreme heat as long as they receive an inch of water a week. If the rabbits did not like them so much, they wouldRead More

Taco Salad

July 22, 2010 by Alea Milham 6 Comments

This salad, even with all of my alterations, reminds me of my childhood. My grandmother knew it was one of my favorites and made it whenever I visited her. My grandmother’s recipe is always a hit. The only thing I don’t like about it is that any uneaten salad will wilt. I don’t like toRead More

How to Grow Hollyhocks

July 15, 2010 by Alea Milham 17 Comments

My hollyhocks are finally starting to bloom. They line a fence that separates our backyard with the driveway to the back pasture. I find the driveway unattractive and like to block it from view. There is a foot path on the back-yard side of the fence, so I don’t have room for tall bushes andRead More

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
