You may use sugar to sweeten your coffee or make your cookies taste great, but did you know that there are other household uses for sugar too? Sugar can be used in all sorts of practical ways around the house, and in more rooms than just the kitchen. Take a peek below at 20 uses for sugar that may be new to you and find out how sugar can become a staple around your home!

20 Frugal Ways to Use Sugar

1. Heal a burned tongue.
Did you sip your coffee too fast? If so, sprinkle some sugar on your tongue and feel the pain melt away.

2. Cool a hot mouth.
Was that salsa spicier than you expected? Sprinkle some sugar in your mouth to help neutralize the sting.

3. Slough away dry heels.
Add a little water to a handful of sugar and massage away the dead skin that tends to accumulate around your heels.

4. Get softer lips.
Take a pinch of sugar and massage it gently over your lips. It will smooth away dead skin revealing fresh skin in no time.

5. Make your make up last longer.
Scrub a little sugar over your lips and cheeks before applying make up. It will leave fresh skin which is easier for the make up to adhere to.

6. Wash away debris on your hands.
Add a little sugar to your hand soap if you have an especially dirty mess you are up against. It will make the soap more abrasive and powerful.

7. Feed your blooms.
Add a few teaspoons of sugar to the vase before adding your flowers. It will feed the flowers helping them last longer.

8. Trap outdoor pests.
Boil a little sugar and water until a syrup forms. Then pour the syrup in a jar and set outside. Wasps, flies, and other unsavory critters will fly in and become stuck.

9. Attract butterflies!
Sprinkle some pieces of fruit with sugar, or soak a sponge in sugar water and set it outside for the butterflies to feast on. They will love it!

10. Banish stains.
Outdoor stains such as grass and dirt can be banished when you make a paste of warm water and sugar. Apply it to the stain and then wash as you typically would.

11. Keep bread fresh.
Put a sugar cube in your bag of bread and it will stay soft and fresher longer.

12. Keep cookies soft.
When you bake a batch of cookies, add a sugar cube to the container you store them in to keep them fresh and soft. No more throwing away rock hard cookies!

13. Make your own sugar scrub.
Add a little sugar to pureed fruit and make your own sugar scrubs. They work wonders on vanishing dry skin and revealing a healthy glow.

14. Treat a cut.
If you are in the kitchen and nick your skin, sprinkle a little sugar on it. It will help keep dangerous bacteria at bay.

15. Make the medicine go down.
Like they say, a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down. Add a tiny sprinkle of sugar to any medicine that your child is not wanting to take due to flavor.

16. Scrub a dirty counter top.
If you have grime on your counters, sprinkle a little sugar before scrubbing them. It will act as an abrasive and give your cleaner a little more scrubbing power. Be sure to rinse well though or your counter will be sticky.

17. Make your own sweet treats.
Melt some preserves with a little sugar and you have an instant and inexpensive dessert topping.

18. Banish roaches.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
