5 Things You Should Not Be Spending Money On, with tips on how to get cheap cable TV shows, how to save money on cleaning supplies and other ways to save.

Keeping a budget is essential when you are taking control of your finances. A budget tells you where you money is going and helps you keep track of spending, saving, and investing. There are many ways you can save and cut costs on different things you are spending money on.

One thing you should keep in mind when you are taking control of your finances is understanding things you should not be spending money on. There are many things you may want or need in life; however, there are usually cheaper or free ways to get them while you are sorting out your budget or trying to save a lot of money to trim your spending.

To start, here are 5 things you should not be spending your money on.

5 Things Your Should Not Be Spending Money On

Cable

With so many options available online and extremely low-priced streaming tools, cutting the cost of cable has become easier now. Invest in Google Chrome, Apple TV or a streaming device to get your favorite shows via Netflix or Hulu, while checking other online options to watch live sports events as well.

Cleaning Products

There are many natural products you can use to clean the house so conventional cleaning products are just a waste of money. A vinegar and water solution is great for cleaning and disinfecting, while baking soda is a perfect scrub. Check out some cleaning product recipes with products you already have in your home.

Individually Packaged Food or Snacks

Instead of packing individually wrapped snacks or pre-cut food, buy the item in bulk and separate it yourself. You’ll save way more money on the products and get more bang for your buck and it only takes a few moments of your time.

Hand Wipes or Facial Wipes

With some paper towels or cut up pieces of a large towel, you can create your own set of facial wipes or hand wipes. Mix a gentle baby soap or natural soap along with water and your favorite essential oils to soak the wipes in. Here is a homemade reusable wipes tutorial.

Dryer Sheets

Dryer sheets are one thing that you don’t have to spend money on. If you don’t put fabric softener in your washing machine, you can crumple up a ball of aluminum foil and throw it into your dryer when drying your clothes.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
