Not only is gardening a fun and rewarding hobby, it can also save you money on all sorts of things. Here are 6 Awesome Ways Gardening Can Save You Money.

If you garden as a hobby, you probably know the fun and beauty gardening brings.  It also saves your family a lot of money and maybe even your neighbors if you tend to grow more than you can eat. If you haven’t started gardening for one reason or another, maybe you will consider it after reading these 6 Awesome Ways Gardening Can Save You Money.

6 Awesome Ways Gardening Can Save You Money

You can grow some of your most eaten produce. The most obvious way gardening can save you money is by allowing you to grow some of your own food. A good garden will grow about ½ pound of food per square foot. If you have a fairly good sized garden, this can add up to hundreds of dollars in savings every year. Additionally, if you grow what is best for your region and what you eat the most of, you save even more. Extend your growing season by making your own cold frame, too!

You can grow enough to save on canned goods. Even a moderate sized garden will often produce more than you can reasonably eat after harvest. This means you can save throughout the year by canning what is left over. You don’t even have to directly can it in it’s harvested state, either. Try making your own jams/jellies, pasta sauces, and even vegetable stock!

You can save on gym fees. Let’s face it; gardening is fun, but it’s physical, too! This means during the gardening season, you could reasonably put your gym membership on hold or cancel it altogether for savings during the season.

You will get more than one use out of supplies you buy. If you don’t have a compost pile or bin now is the time to start one. You can even make your own compost bin very easily! A compost pile allows you to make your own nutrient rich soil for growing in so you get more use out of what you do buy. You can also use many recyclables in the garden as well and even things like eggshells to grow your seedlings in!

You can trade with neighbors to save money on other things. Who doesn’t love garden fresh produce? See if you can trade with neighbors for services like lawn care, child care, or even use of their carpet shampooer and save on carpet cleaning.

You can spend less on landscaping. If you have a larger garden or at least one that takes up a part of your yard, consider it a part you don’t have to spend money keeping up on and possibly paying someone else to do it.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
