We all know the effects of stress are not enjoyable. To help you relax and unwind from the day, simply try loading up on these 7 Healthy Snacks to Reduce Stress.  These foods have actually been proven to help reduce stress, depression, and anxiety.

7 Healthy Snacks to Reduce Stress

Berries– All berries including blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries are high in vitamin C.  Increased vitamin C in our diets has been shown to combat stress.

Dark chocolate–  With all the healthy antioxidants, dark chocolate is on the top of the heart healthy lists. It helps lower blood pressure and add a sense of calm.

Oatmeal– Oatmeal is high in complex carbohydrates. It produces serotonin which is a feel-good chemical that can create a soothing feeling and help lessen stress.

Nuts– Grab a handful of cashews, walnuts, pistachios, or almonds.  These pack a powerful punch of fiber, unsaturated fats, and antioxidants that can help lower blood pressure. Walnuts have omega-3 fatty acids that have been linked to reduce depression. With walnuts and pistachios containing high levels of selenium, they can help elevate your mood.

Yogurt– For energizing protein and added calcium that your body needs for release of the feeling good neurotransmitters, try plain non-fat Greek yogurt. Add some fresh berries for sweetness and immunity boosting vitamin C.

Avocado– A healthy serving of this fruit (yes, fruit) contains a nice dose of B vitamins that can help reduce anxiety and stress.  They are high in monounsaturated fat as well. This can help lower blood pressure which often is raised when we are stressed.

Oranges– Oranges are loaded with vitamin C and are known to lower blood pressure. They naturally contain the stress hormone cortisol. This makes oranges a quick and easy snack to help ease stress and anxiety.

So instead of reaching for the usual comfort foods like potato chips and chocolate chip cookies, try these healthy options to help you eat your way to a calmer day.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
