The holidays can be expensive, but you can have fun as a family with these ideas for frugal holiday family fun.

Frugal Holiday Family Fun- You don't need a large budget to create Christmas memories with your family. Enjoy these fun and affordable activities this year.

We are officially in the holiday season! I don’t know about you but I get so excited during this time of year. The holidays are the perfect time of year to enjoy family outings, make traditions, and simply enjoy some good old fashion fun! My family is always so busy during the holiday season doing different activities, yet we don’t spend much money at all. This time of year is great for having some Frugal Holiday Family Fun. I’ve put together a few of the things my family enjoys doing during the holiday season, and I hope these activities inspire you to have some fun with your family.

Frugal Holiday Family Fun

Play in the Snow: If you live in an area that gets snow, this is a great way to have some frugal family fun. Take the kids out sledding, make snowmen, snow angels or maybe a snowball fight! If you really want to get creative while playing in the snow, get some food coloring, add in some water and let the kids “paint” in the snow. This is an activity the whole family will enjoy!

Watch a Tree Lighting: Most communities do a yearly tree lighting ceremony. Do a little research and see if there is a tree lighting ceremony going on in your community. Typically, these events are free or only cost a few dollars to attend. This type of event is something that your family can turn into a yearly tradition.

Have Fun in the Kitchen: The holiday time is my favorite time of year for baking up some yummy treats. Gather up some cookie cutters, sugar cookie dough, frosting and decorations. Spend the whole day baking and decorating cookies! Not only will the family have a blast but you can give plates of cookies out to family and neighbors as holiday gifts.

Crafts: There are so many fun Christmas crafts you can make with your family during the holidays. You can make snowflakes, candles, Christmas cards, ornaments or anything else you can think up. Spend some time looking up holiday crafts on Pinterest and you will have an endless supply of fun and frugal things to do with the family.

Movie Nights: Miracle on 34th Street, A Christmas Story, A Charlie Brown Christmas, and Home Alone are just a few of the popular Christmas movies you can watch with your family. Make some hot cocoa, popcorn and enjoy a family movie night! You can have a movie night several times during the holiday season.

Visit Santa: Going to see Santa in the mall can get a little pricey but community events are usually a lot more affordable. Do a little research to find out when Santa will be making an appearance in your town and make a day of it. Take the kids to see Santa, enjoy a warm drink and have lots of fun.

Cut a Christmas Tree: Unless you put up an artificial tree buying a Christmas tree is probably an expense on your holiday list. Instead of driving down to the local tree lot take a trip to a Christmas tree farm. Going to a Christmas tree farm provides you with a day of fun without any extra expense. Most Christmas tree farms have fresh baked goods, hot cocoa, cider and much more. This is another activity that can turn into a family tradition.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
