Here is how to make simmering potpourri. Use this simmering potpourri recipe which is a mixture of fresh fruit and spices.

How to Make Simmering Potpourri Recipe and Tips

I love the smells of the kitchen from fall through Christmas: cinnamon, clove, baking apples, and vanilla being warmed in cookies while the smell floats throughout the house. But I can’t spend everyday baking to keep the house smelling delicious, so my version of simmering stovetop potpourri is my answer.   It makes the whole house feel like a holiday on any old ordinary day. The air is filled with spices and sweet simmering fruit smells, putting a smile on everyone’s face.  The ingredients are all items that you are likely to already have on your shelves (and in your fruit basket)

This Simmering Potpourri Recipe makes a lovely hostess gift as well. To give this as a gift, just place the ingredients in a quart mason jar with a pretty ribbon and a homemade tag explaining how to use and take it with you to the next home event you are invited to.

  • 1 Tbsp. Vanilla extract

Directions:

  1. Place all ingredients in a large saucepan. I used a 2-quart saucepan.
  2. Fill with water 2 inches from the rim.
  3. Bring the potpourri mixture to a boil. Then lower the flame and allow the potpourri to simmer.

During the height of the season, I leave mine on the stove top and turn it on for a few hours every day. Just add more water, and scoop out old fruit after a day or two with a slotted spoon, adding fresh ingredients as needed.

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
