There is something that is very satisfying about canning your own foods.  It saves money and is a way to enjoy your favorite recipes year round.  Canning and preserving your own food is also surprisingly easy to do. Here are 8 Must-Have Canning Supplies that will make the job even easier.

8 Must-Have Canning Supplies

1. Canning and Preserving 101: Your Easy Guide to Preserved Food Using Essential Beginners Recipes and Home Jars, by Amelia Brooks

Many of us had the fortune of learning to can from our grandmothers, but if you didn’t it can be an intimidating process. Fortunately, there are some great sources like the book Canning and Preserving 101.  It covers everything from vegetables to seafood and sweets.  This introductory book will help you through all the steps of canning and includes some recipes as well.8 Must-Have Canning Supplies- Canning and Preserving 101 book

2. Canning Jars

Finding the right canning jar for the job is important.  These jars are widemouthed and perfect for preserving jams, jellies sauces, mustard and flavored vinegar.  You can refrigerate up to 3 weeks, freeze up to 1 year, fresh preserve and store up to 1 year.8 Must-Have Canning Supplies- canning jars

3. Stock Pot

Having a large capacity stock pot helps to get the job done.  This one holds 7 regular canning quart jars or 8-pint jars.  It’s made of fine quality stainless steel 18-10, with decent gauge for strength and durability.  The handles are riveted and coated for easy use.8 Must-Have Canning Supplies- canning stock pot

Canning racks make heating up and transporting hot jars that much easier.  This one holds 7 one-pint jars and has  contoured grip handles can rest on pots rim.  It is dishwasher safe.8 Must-Have Canning Supplies- Canning Rack

5. Canning Funnel

How about a double walled canning funnel that fits wide and regular mouth canning jars.  It features headspace measurements for precise filling and helps with necessary air space for proper sealing.  The outer collar keeps funnel off the counter when not in use; avoids contamination and counter-top messes.  The high heat polypropylene won’t stain and it is dishwasher safe.8 Must- Have Canning Supplies- Canning Funnel

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
