September 6, 2013 by Alea Milham Leave a Comment

While there are a lot of tutorials for how to make homemade baby wipes, you don’t see many people talking about something that is even more frugal and eco-friendly: reusable baby wipes. For my first child, I put baby washes cloths in container and covered them with a solution of 2 cups of water, 2Read More

Naturally Frugal Tip: Make Your Own Wrinkle Releaser

August 16, 2013 by Alea Milham Leave a Comment

A while back I was given a sample of wrinkle releaser. I had my doubts about it, so it sat unused in my cupboard for months…and then I tried it and fell in love. I felt guilty because of the packaging that would have to be tossed and I wondered about the aerosol spray. IRead More

Naturally Frugal Tip: Make Reusable Disinfecting Wipes

July 5, 2013 by Alea Milham 2 Comments

My six year old is starting to help more around the house. I decided to add wiping down the bathroom counter to his chores…but he requires strict supervision whenever he has a bottle of liquids…even homemade eco-friendly cleaners. As a future scientist, he can’t help experimenting. Watching him while he cleans offsets any help heRead More

Naturally Frugal Tip: Make Your Own Air Fresheners

June 28, 2013 by Alea Milham 2 Comments

I hate when smells linger in the house. And since I cook quite a bit that can be a problem. Now nobody minds the residual scent of oatmeal cookies or homemade breads, but fish and bacon are another matter! I combat smells with a couple of methods. First, I scrub all the pots and pansRead More

Naturally Frugal Tip: How to Clean Your Sink without Bleach

June 21, 2013 by Alea Milham 1 Comment

I really liked using Soft Scrub to clean my kitchen sink. Then we moved to the country where we have a septic tank. If you have ever had a septic tank, you know that bleach is discouraged because it kills the good bacteria needed to break down waste. I had to find a bleach-free alternative Read More

Naturally Frugal Tip: Make Your Own Body Wash

June 14, 2013 by Alea Milham 10 Comments

I prefer body wash over bar soap – it just doesn’t leave nearly as much soap scum in the bath tub and shower. That convenience comes at a price though. Body wash is more expensive than bar soap, especially if you are looking for a chemical-free, gluten-free body wash. My youngest son and I bothRead More

Naturally Frugal Tip: DIY Dry Shampoo

June 7, 2013 by Alea Milham 2 Comments

When I ride my horse I always wear my helmet. Always! Even though the side effect of wearing a helmet is helmet hair.  Unfortunately I don’t always have time to wash my hair after riding my horse and before going out in public. That’s when I use Dry Shampoo. It absorbs the oils and actuallyRead More

How to Make Your Own Toothpaste

May 31, 2013 by Alea Milham 1 Comment

I have mentioned before that I have Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. People with under-active thyroids are often encouraged to avoid fluoride. Our water supply is not fluoridated, so my main source of exposure to fluoride is toothpaste. I have bought unfluoridated toothpaste for years, but finally decided to try my hand at making it. Have you everRead More

May 20, 2013 by Alea Milham 1 Comment

We live in the country, have pets, and children, which is the perfect combination for creating some pretty awesome carpet stains. Homemade Sunscreen Recipes

May 10, 2013 by Alea Milham Leave a Comment

I try to be very careful about what I put on my kid’s skin. I prefer to use clothing and hats to provide protection from the sun, but that is not always enough. With ever-changing guidelines about what sunscreen ingredients are safe, it just seems easier to me to make homemade sunscreen rather than tryingRead More

Naturally Frugal Tip: How to Cut Kid’s Hair At Home

May 3, 2013 by Alea Milham 2 Comments

For some reason none of my kids liked getting their hair cut in a shop when they were young. That is an understatement. They all hated it! At first I tried to reason with them and find ways to make it appealing, but I was unsuccessful. Even bribes didn’t work. Then I realized that cuttingRead More

Naturally Frugal Tip: Use Baking Soda to Remove Burned Food from Pans

April 12, 2013 by Alea Milham 1 Comment

I have been using the same pans since 1994. Yes, they are old and scruffy, but we rub along well together. Last year I decided I needed to expand my pot and pan collection to get a few specialty pans (read single use and fairly expensive). Did specialty pans improve my recipes? Not really, inRead More

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
