Progress is Slow in the Vegetable Garden

May 1, 2010 by Alea Milham 8 Comments

We have not had any more losses, but we haven’t had much growth in the vegetable garden either. Since we have had two different snow storms blow through in the last week, I am content with survival! The spinach is roughly the same size it was last week, but it is being nibbled on. TimeRead More

Delicate, but Strong Flowers!

April 30, 2010 by Alea Milham 13 Comments

I love living in a valley most of the time. We have beautiful views of the mountains year round. However, when the wind whips through our little valley, I dream of living in a less aerodynamic terrain.  It is not uncommon to have wind gusts in excess of 70 miles an hour and the dustRead More

Using Kid’s Art to Create Note Cards

April 30, 2010 by Alea Milham 8 Comments

I made note cards out of some of my children’s art work for the grandmothers and aunts at Christmas. They were very well received, so I am going to be making some for my husband’s mother for Mother’s Day. The paintings were too large for my scanner, so I took them to Office Depot toRead More

What Type of Plastic is In Your Tupperware?

April 29, 2010 by Alea Milham 8 Comments

When I decluttered my kitchen earlier in the month, I weeded out more of my plastic containers. I checked the recycling code (number in the triangle on the bottom of the item) and used this guide to help me decide if I wanted to keep the item. Most of the pieces of Tupperware that IRead More

Ideas for Reusing Tissue Boxes

April 28, 2010 by Alea Milham 26 Comments

I have mentioned before that we usually use handkerchiefs (I actually cut up soft pieces of flannel for my toddler; it is so much gentler on his little nose than even the softest paper tissue, but I digress). I do, however, keep Kleenex on hand for company so I occasionally have leftover boxes. Before IRead More

April 27, 2010 by Alea Milham 3 Comments

I have had a busy day resolving issues with the DMV on our truck so that I could legally pick up a load of hay for the horses. Now that I know the animals all have food, I can turn to the menu for my family. 😀 I found a few new recipes while IRead More

Frugal Rabbit Deterrents

April 23, 2010 by Alea Milham 8 Comments

Some plants like sunflowers, marigolds, and snap dragons which are supposed to be rabbit resistant are still vulnerable  when they are seedlings. I don’t want to wait until my flowers are a foot tall and flowering before I put them outside, so I have developed a few tricks. One trick is to cut the bottomRead More

Tender summer squash and zucchini, cut thin and sauteed, and seasoned with Italian seasonings.

Sautéed Summer Squash and Zucchini

April 23, 2010 by Alea Milham 9 Comments

Here is a quick and very easy recipe for Sautéed Summer Squash and Zucchini.  Basil and oregano gives it a nice Italian flavor. The seasoning for this dish was inspired by the Vegetable Lasagna I made last week. The zucchini layer was so delicious that I ate a lot of the zucchini slices that wereRead More

Petals and Puddle Jumping

April 23, 2010 by Alea Milham 9 Comments

On Tuesday, I snuck out as the storm was rolling in to take pictures of our trees in bloom. Today, I patiently waited until the snow melted to take pictures of a few of our flowers.  I am always amazed at how the pansies handle snow. We have dug the walk out of several feetRead More

The Trees Are Blooming

April 20, 2010 by Alea Milham 4 Comments

I woke up this morning and watched the sun disappear. It was replaced by dark clouds, high winds, thunder, and eventually horizontal rain. However, I decided to brave the elements to bring you pictures of some of our blooming trees. Our Weeping Cherry Tree has just begun to bloom. This tree is gorgeous once itRead More

Speeding Up Vegetable Prep

April 20, 2010 by Alea Milham 3 Comments

Reusable Snack Bags are Working For Me

April 14, 2010 by Alea Milham 12 Comments

I have been slowly moving away from using disposable items for years. The last hold out was Ziploc bags, which were so convenient for packing cheerios and crackers for my kids. However, last year I discovered reusable snack bags, which has finally made it possible for me to pass the paper/plastic aisle at the groceryRead More

Look What’s Blooming!

April 13, 2010 by Alea Milham 8 Comments

I returned from my trip this weekend to find more bulbs and even some trees in bloom. Some of the tulips have started to open up along the walk. If you look closely you will see where the rabbits nibbled on the foliage. I am very happy to see the trees bloom, but it doesRead More

April 12, 2010 by Alea Milham 10 Comments

I am getting my menu up late today, not because I got home from my trip after midnight last night, but because this morning I found out that my credit card number has been stolen, the DMV has still not mailed my tags, and my computer is infected with a virus. After I post thisRead More

Forever in Love with Perennials!

April 10, 2010 by Alea Milham 2 Comments

It snowed on Easter and I mentally pushed out the date that the asparagus would make its appearance. Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
