Decluttering Question: Are My Belongings a Drain on My Time?

April 8, 2010 by Alea Milham 6 Comments

Today’s Clear Out the Clutter Challenge is the Kitchen and Stockpile. Just like the living room challenge, I thought I had done a pretty good job of decluttering the room earlier in the year. However, I have approached our possessions a little differently since my husband shared an experience at work. A while back someRead More

Roasted Potatoes and Dry Onion Soup Mix Substitute

April 8, 2010 by Alea Milham 12 Comments

I love, love, love roasted potatoes made with onion soup mix. The problem is store bought onion soup mix contains gluten.  I had to give up my beloved roasted potatoes until I started exploring the possibilities of making substitutes for some of my favorite items from scratch. I actually have come to enjoy making myRead More

5 Minute Decluttering Session

April 7, 2010 by Alea Milham 3 Comments

When I read a friend’s  tweet about decluttering her living room, two things ran through my mind: I just decluttered the house last month and even if there is still clutter lurking, I don’t have time right now. Then I decided to take a box and see how much clutter I could get rid ofRead More

How Does Your Hyacinth Grow?

April 7, 2010 by Alea Milham 3 Comments

I am so glad you asked! I can’t wait to show you how my pink hyacinth grows: There is the promise of a flower. Stretching up. And now out. For this I have waited all winter! Aren’t you glad I don’t do this for each flower on my property? Do you enjoy watching the progressRead More

Gluten-Free Lemon Berry Muffins

April 7, 2010 by Alea Milham 2 Comments

This is one of my less healthy muffin recipes, but it happens to be one of our spring time favorites! Lemon Berry Muffins Ingredients 2 lemons, zested and juiced 1 cup milk (use almond or rice milk to make this dairy free) 1/2 cup vegetable oil 2 eggs 1 cup white sugar 1/2 cup brownRead More

Birthday Shopping in My Attic and a Non-Consumer Birthday Cake

April 7, 2010 by Alea Milham 7 Comments

For some reason, one of the hardest thing for me to reconcile with our bonus baby is what to do with the toys from the first batch. When children are born a couple years apart toys are naturally passed down, but with a 14 year gap between my second and third child, the toys hadRead More

Cajun Black Beans and Rice

April 6, 2010 by Alea Milham 5 Comments

This Cajun Black Beans and Rice recipe makes a filling meatless dinner.  This is an easy recipe made in one pot – no extra dishes to clean. I am busy making extra food, so that my husband and kids do not starve while I’m out of town this weekend. Today, I made a double batchRead More

Gluten-Free Carrot Oatmeal Muffins

April 6, 2010 by Alea Milham Leave a Comment

I often find inspiration for my recipes from regular bakers. These muffins are no exception; they were inspired by The Best Ever Muffins by Loving My Domestic Life.  I  replaced the flour with gluten-free flours, substituted brown rice syrup for the sugar, and removed the oil. Then I added grated carrots, some more spices, and chopped pecans.Read More

Menu Plan Monday – The Leftovers Edition

April 5, 2010 by Alea Milham 4 Comments

This week is unusual, both because of the large quantities of leftovers and because I will be out of town visiting my Dad for 3 of the days, leaving my husband and teenagers to fend for themselves (taking my 3 yo with me). I will make large meals on Wednesday and Thursday, so they canRead More

Square Foot Gardening

April 3, 2010 by Alea Milham 3 Comments

Erin at $5 Dinners is sharing the latest happenings in her Square Foot Garden on Saturdays. Erin is also inviting readers to link up their square foot gardening posts. I enjoyed watching Erin’s garden last year and benefited from the fact that she harvests her produce one to two weeks before me. That gives herRead More

The Garden is Open, Kind of…

April 3, 2010 by Alea Milham 1 Comment

Last year, I opened my garden in March, even though our last freeze is usually in June. I was able to carefully plan ahead and cover the plants before a snow or freezing temperatures hit our area.  The plants thrived and I was picking tomatoes in May before most of my neighbors had even plantedRead More

Gluten-Free Oatmeal Scotchies

March 30, 2010 by Alea Milham 1 Comment

I almost didn’t share this recipe with you. I tasted it about 15 minutes after it came out of the oven and I wasn’t crazy about it or its appearance. My kids liked it; my daughter even went so far as to say she preferred it to regular oatmeal scotchies, but she prefers “wholesome snacks”,Read More

Pasta Bake Recipe with Spaghetti Sauce

Pasta Bake Recipe

March 29, 2010 by Alea Milham 17 Comments

My daughter thinks the name Pasta Bake sounds too boring for such a delicious meal and keeps suggesting alternatives like “cheesy, tomatoey divinity”. My youngest son calls this dish a Pasta Melt because of the melted cheese on top. No matter what name this casserole goes by, it is sure to be a hit withRead More

Gluten Free Tomato Soup Cake

March 29, 2010 by Alea Milham 1 Comment

First let me say, this cake tastes much better than it sounds! This recipe originated in the late 1920s or early 1930s. It was enormously popular throughout the depression as it is made without using eggs or butter.  It was sometimes called Mystery Cake and a game was made of making first-time eaters guess theRead More

Berry and Spinach Smoothie

March 26, 2010 by Alea Milham 3 Comments

After daily nagging encouragement on My 1/2 Dozen Daily to try Green Monster Smoothies, I finally had the incentive I needed: wilty spinach and soft grapes. I pulled out my blender and finally made a smoothie! In the above smoothie I used: 1 cup of cranberry pomegranate juice 1 scoop of rice based vanilla proteinRead More

Oatmeal Scotchies

Slightly Healthier Oatmeal Scotchies

March 26, 2010 by Alea Milham 2 Comments

I almost didn’t share this recipe with you. I tasted it about 15 minutes after it came out of the oven and I wasn’t crazy about it or its appearance. My kids liked it; my daughter even went so far as to say she preferred it to regular oatmeal scotchies, but she prefers “wholesome snacks”,Read More

Hummingbird Muffins

March 23, 2010 by Alea Milham 10 Comments

This recipe is inspired by my Hummingbird Cake recipe. I decided to make it just a little bit healthier, so I wasn’t serving my kids cupcakes for breakfast.  I used a combination of heartier flours (I chose gluten free flours, but feel free to experiment with whole wheat flours). I also used unrefined sweeteners and replaced the oilRead More

Pink Bean Soup Recipe using a ham bone

Pink Bean and Ham Soup

March 23, 2010 by Alea Milham 2 Comments

Pink Bean Soup is one of my favorites from my childhood. It is also quite frugal; the recipe calls for dried beans and is flavored with a leftover ham hock. If you have not used a leftover ham hock to make split pea or bean soup, you will be amazed at how much meat isRead More

Menu Plan – Week of March 22nd

March 22, 2010 by Alea Milham 4 Comments

I chose to play in the garden on my first day back from vacation instead of restocking the refrigerator, so the first couple days of this menu are pantry/freezer meals. My husband did make an emergency store run for milk, eggs, vegetables, fruit, and dark chocolate M&M’s. I will reluctantly return to my schedule ofRead More

Guest Post – Refrigerator Games

March 19, 2010 by Alea Milham 3 Comments

This week I am on vacation and since I do not have any food waste to share with you, Angela Barton of My Year Without Spending graciously allowed me to run a reprint of her post “Refigerator Games”. I hope you enjoy her solution for forgotten food as much as I did when I first read thisRead More

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
