I am currently vacationing in San Diego. Hopefully, I will have some pictures to share with you when I return next week. I am enjoying the lush green environment and warm weather. My youngest son, who was born and lived all of his three years in the high desert has been particulary enthralled with theRead More

Menu Plan – The Vacation Edition

March 15, 2010 by Alea Milham 5 Comments

When we vacation, I try to make arrangements so that we do not have eat every meal at a restaurant. We usually stay in a hotel that has at least a small refigerator and microwave, so we can prepare some simple meals in the hotel. Occasionally, we are fotunate enough to have a small kitchenRead More

March 11, 2010 by Alea Milham 7 Comments

Overheard at my house: DH: Are we breaking our resolution by taking this vacation?Me: No, because we aren’t buying stuff.DH: So, we’re okay as long as we have nothing to show for the trip?Me: Exactly! We might not come home with souvenirs, but we will come home with wonderful memories, shared experiences, and hundreds ofRead More

Herbed Asparagus

March 9, 2010 by Alea Milham 11 Comments

When you are purchasing asparagus, look for firm, fresh, spears with closed, compact tips and uniform diameter and color. It does not matter whether the spears are thin or thick, different varieties have different diameters. The spear on the left has a compact tip, the one on the right has begun to bud. If leftRead More

My Potato Garden

March 9, 2010 by Alea Milham 6 Comments

I sometimes supplement my seed potatoes with store-bought organic potatoes. I use paper bags to hold my potatoes until they are ready to be put in the ground. I keep the potatoes in a dark spot in the garage where they are stored at approximately 40 degrees. I will plant them at the end ofRead More

March 8, 2010 by Alea Milham 5 Comments

In less than a week, we head to San Diego for a much overdue family vacation. So this week our menu is driven by the need to eat all of the perishable items before we leave. We have a lot of fruit, vegetables, and Grilled Chicken on hand. Some of the items can beRead More

How to Frost a Cake, Not the Cake Plate

March 4, 2010 by Alea Milham 5 Comments

Put several pieces of wax paper underneath the cake before you begin frosting. (I have made my pieces wider than necessary, because I plan on using them to wrap up leftover pieces of cake). When you are done frosting the cake, pull the wax paper out, and serve!

Cleaning Up the Clutter

March 4, 2010 by Alea Milham 5 Comments

I won the book,  Cleaning Up the Clutter in a giveaway hosted by My 1/2 Dozen Daily.  Although I have read through most of the book, I am still working on chapter one: How to Feel Personally Organized. My house is clean and fairly well organized, yet I often feel disorganized. In large part thisRead More

Baking Tip: How to Make a Level Cake

March 2, 2010 by Alea Milham 4 Comments

Actually this is less of a baking tip and more of a cutting tip. To create a level layer cake, use a bread knife to cut the rounded top off and using the cake pan as the guide: I saw the knife in a bit, then slowly spin the pan while cutting. (Feed the topRead More

Honey Cake

March 2, 2010 by Alea Milham 11 Comments

I have been playing with alternative sweeteners lately. My favorite is brown rice syrup, with honey a close second.  Honey is sweeter than brown rice syrup, so you can use less of it in recipes, making it easier to create a balance between your wet and dry ingredients. The other advantage honey has is that IRead More

Dinner Menu – Week of March 1rst

March 1, 2010 by Alea Milham 5 Comments

My menu plans have changed a lot over the years; primarily to meet the needs of my family. I have done once a month planning and cooking, a bimonthly rotation, a weekly plan that included breakfast and lunch, and a very loose plan where we had certain planned nights (i.e. Italian, Mexican, Pizza, salad, etc.),Read More

Flaunting My Rhubarb

February 27, 2010 by Alea Milham 7 Comments

I wish I had flowers to flaunt, and some day I will:But I do have rhubarb to flaunt: My rhubarb is rebounding this year and I couldn’t be happier. They went through quite an ordeal last year, but they seem to have forgotten all about it! Two years ago, I was introduced the the conceptRead More

How Am I Going to Clothe My Children on The Compact?

February 25, 2010 by Alea Milham 4 Comments

Have you wondered how I am going to clothe my children while committing to the The Compact this year? That question can be answered in large part by visiting Angela today at My Year Without Spending. She has once again featured one of my daughter’s thrift store finds on her latest installment of Thrifty Threads. Angela participated inRead More

Lemon Poppy Seed Bundt Cake

Lemon Poppy Seed Bundt Cake

February 25, 2010 by Alea Milham 8 Comments

This is a “healthy” lemon poppy seed bundt cake, sweetened with honey instead of refined sugar (if you decide not to glaze it). While I officially named this Lemon Poppy Bundt Seed, we almost named it Everything but the Kitchen Sink Cake when my two year old pulled up a chair and started throwing thingsRead More

Minimizing Toilet Paper Waste By Toddlers

February 24, 2010 by Alea Milham 6 Comments

We have a fourteen year gap between our second and third last child. I feel like I am having to learn how to parent all over again. I am sure that I have forgotten more than I ever actually knew. Most child rearing tips come back to me AFTER an incident. This tip is noRead More

Snow Lollipops

February 24, 2010 by Alea Milham 5 Comments

The lollipop sticks are the legs of an inverted table. As the snow accumulated it was slightly pushed over by the wind. It continued to accumulate in this manner until each leg of the table had a lollipop comprised entirely of snow on top. This post has been linked to Outdoor Wednesday and Wordless Wednesday.

Homeade Chewy Granola Bars

Homemade Chewy Granola Bars

February 23, 2010 by Alea Milham 13 Comments

Here’s a pretty easy one-bowl recipe for delicious homemade chewy granola bars. My daughter loves granola bars, but I don’t like the expense of buying  my daughter’s favorite granola bars. I experimented with ingredients while my daughter acted as taste tester. Although she hoped that I would continue to fail, so I would have toRead More

Sweetened Condensed Milk Substitute

February 23, 2010 by Alea Milham 3 Comments

Just because we are living out of the pantry does not mean we (and when I say we, I mean my husband) can do without essentials like French Vanilla Creamer. My creamer recipe calls for sweetened condensed milk, which I do not have on hand. There are some great suggestions for making your own creamerRead More

Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
