One of my favorite things about fall is picking apples! We have 2 apple trees, so we usually have bushels of apples each autumn. Apples are my favorite fruit; I never tire of eating freshly picked-apples. If you don’t grow your own apples, you can still enjoy the fun by going apple picking with your family at a nearby orchard.
I have lots of fun using our apples in recipes. I make lots of homemade apple sauce, and I make some apple pies and tarts, but my kids favorite use for our apples is to make caramel apples. The combination of a crisp, tart apple and a sweet candy or caramel coating is undeniably delicious.
In October we host a harvest party. I let the kids create their own caramel apples as one of the activities and it is always a hit. I set it up as a caramel apple dessert bar. I melt caramel and keep it soft by putting it in a slow cooker on low. I place different toppings in bowls on the buffet and place a skewer in each apple. Then the kids can dip their apples in the melted caramel and roll it in the toppings of their choice. It is so much fun to see the combinations that the kids create.
