September 21, 2009 by Alea Milham 8 Comments

Last week was unusually expensive, so I have declared it a “eat from the pantry week” to save money on groceries. I have chicken in the freezer and lots of fresh fruit and veggies in the garden, so the only thing I will need to buy is milk. Monday – Teriyaki Chicken, Basmati Rice, andRead More

Minimizing Food Waste When Things Go Wrong

September 19, 2009 by Alea Milham 6 Comments

Yesterday, I had the bright idea to multitask and make spaghetti sauce with some garden vegetables that needed to be used up, while I was cooking something else for dinner. In between dinner tasks, I would chop vegetables and throw them in the pot. I let it simmer through dinner and after the dishes wereRead More

Redefining Convenience Food

September 16, 2009 by Alea Milham 7 Comments

Every time I bit into a piece of fruit this summer, I was amazed at how sweet and delicious it was. At first I thought it was because I had become better at picking out fruit, but if you have read my food waste posts, you know this is not the case. What was differentRead More

Brown Bagging It and GF Chocolate Cereal Treats

September 10, 2009 by Alea Milham 7 Comments

Although it is quite unfashionable, my husband takes a sack lunch with him to work with each morning. He also brings a stainless steel thermos of tea and a coffee to go (the coffee is long gone by the time he gets to the office, so he really isn’t walking in juggling all of thatRead More

No Bake Cookies

September 9, 2009 by Alea Milham 6 Comments

No, we did not get snow. But I absolutely love this picture of Rew (age 9 months) watching his dad shovel snow: This is the sixth picture from my sixth file. (You have no idea how glad I am that this was not a picture of rotting food!) I was tagged by Rebecca at TurnedRead More

Scalloped Potatoes Recipe with Ham and Peas

September 3, 2009 by Alea Milham 10 Comments

My favorite scalloped potatoes recipe was inspired by holiday leftovers. My mom usually made ham, scalloped potatoes, and peas for Easter dinner. The day after Easter I would take a little of each of the leftover dishes and stir them together and make my improved scalloped potatoes. With its origins in my early childhood, thisRead More

Extending Your Tomato Growing Season and Broiled Cherry Tomato Recipe

August 27, 2009 by Alea Milham 15 Comments

I have left a tip for extending the growing season of tomato plants in the comment section on a couple of blogs that I follow. I realized that unless you follow the same blogs (which I highly recommend) and read all of the comments (even those left by incoherent, sleep deprived mamas at 2:00 a.m.),Read More

August 24, 2009 by Alea Milham 12 Comments

I needed to make a dessert this weekend, but I was working under time constraints and had limited energy. Just thinking of cooking made me tired! This evening I made The Thrifty Country Woman’s Choucroute a l’ Alsacienne. I followed the recipe (if you are a regular reader you know that is not my strength) except, (if you are a regular reader, you knew that was coming) I did not add the sausage. I have been trying to eat from theRead More

There Must be a 50 Ways to Frost a Brownie

August 7, 2009 by Alea Milham 23 Comments

I try to avoid controversial subjects on my blog, so I am not going to debate chewy versus dry cakelike brownies, nor am I going to engage in an argument about the merits of naked brownies. I am going to assume that the purists were scared off by my title and that I am talkingRead More

We lived in Southern California during the Northridge Earthquake. We were very fortunate and only had one item break! The glass blender attachment for my food processor was our only loss. Welcome. I'm Alea!

On Premeditated Leftovers I share simple recipes made with whole foods, practical shopping tips, time saving techniques, and meal planning strategies. I also share tips for minimizing food waste, so more of the food that is purchased ends up on the table.

While volunteering as a budget counselor, I realized that food is the element of most people’s budgets where they have the greatest control. I set out to develop low-cost recipes from scratch to prove it’s possible to create delicious meals on a limited budget. Eating well while spending less is about more than just creating recipes using inexpensive ingredients; it’s about creatively combining ingredients so you don’t feel deprived and are inspired to stick to your budget.
